High pressure - clean and ready for operation in five days and four nights

Gelsenkirchen.

Synthetic fibers, detergents, insulating materials or pharmaceuticals are made from them - high-purity substances such as benzene, toluene, xylene and arsol. Arsol Aromatics produces these chemicals in a large plant in the middle of the Ruhr conurbation. Arsol Aromatics' high standards include overhauling its numerous distillation columns, heat exchangers and vessels once a year. For this purpose, production came to a standstill and Lobbe arrived to clean the plant before repair and maintenance work could take place. Lobbe used robot-assisted technology to clean the plant over five days and nights in shift work as part of the overhaul job. However, the robot can not only "clean", the connected computer records the cleaning process at the same time.

No residual substances into the environment High pressure water at supersonic speed

A total of eight heat exchangers, each with several hundred tubes, various tanks and pipelines were on the job. Lobbe mainly used high-pressure water technology - with a pressure of up to 2,500 bar, which emerges from the nozzles at supersonic speed. By way of comparison, a garden hose has a pressure of just 4 bar, while a standard household high-pressure cleaner has a pressure of 130 bar. In addition to the manual work with the high-pressure gun against deposits on pipelines, the tank washing head was used: the washing head, reminiscent of a helicopter, literally floats in the tank and can clean three-dimensionally with its four high-pressure nozzles without a skilled worker having to climb into the tank.

Robot is fast and thorough

For the cleaning of more than a thousand pipes with a diameter of a 1-euro coin, each six to eight meters long, Lobbe Industrieservice uses a technology specially designed for this purpose. With the Robotized Lance Frame (RLF), a frame with three axes (width, height, depth) is first set up, on which the drive for the high-pressure hoses moves. The system is controlled by a computer. Up to three steel hoses at a time clean the pipes under high pressure. The advantage of this process is that three pipes can be cleaned at a time, a computer records the cleaning process and the skilled worker is outside the danger zone. By means of a remote control, the technician moves the RLF to the next position with pinpoint accuracy. The computer, which is located in a water-protected housing, knows which position this is. In the same work step, the rinsing water was collected with a special suction pressure truck and later disposed of properly.

Five days and four nights

In total, the entire cleaning was completed in just five days and four nights. All this served to maintain Arsol Aromatics' high safety standards. At the end of the work, acceptance was carried out by TÜV Nord.
