Lobbe redevelops Schwarze Pumpe

Lobbe Industrieservice remediates last large contaminated site in Schwarze Pumpe

Schwarze Pumpe. The federally owned LMBV (Lausitzer Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft) has commissioned a consortium with the participation of Lobbe Industrieservice to clean up the last major contaminated site on the premises of the former VEB Schwarze Pumpe. With a share of 30.1 million euros, Lobbe has the largest single contract in the company's history in the environmental sector and will build and operate the technical core of the remediation with a vacuum-thermal soil cleaning system.

According to experts, around 280,000 tonnes of soil, which is highly contaminated with hydrocarbons, will have to be cleaned up over an area of 45,000 square metres. The clean-up will take place in a vacuum thermal system designed by Lobbe. In addition, there are about 200,000 tonnes of less contaminated soil. Lobbe's ARGE partner is the company Bauer. It will mainly carry out work within the scope of earthwork-related measures. The project is expected to take five years. The remediated site is intended for the establishment of new industrial and commercial areas.

Until the fall of communism, benzene and phenols, among other things, leaked into the ground over a large area, up to a depth of 14 metres, in the area of distillation, dephenolisation and extraction due to accidents and handling losses. Since the groundwater in the region is rising again due to the withdrawal from opencast lignite mining, remediation is necessary. Otherwise, the environmentally hazardous hydrocarbons would enter the groundwater.

It is reported that the installation of the remediation construction site will begin in the short term. The soil cleaning plant, a replica of the Lobbe vacuum thermal plant in Rositz modified according to the latest findings and adapted to the volume requirements, is to go into test operation from September 2018 and then into the regular operating phase.
