It is freezing cold at the remediation construction site in Nauen, Brandenburg. "We deliberately scheduled this remediation work for the cold season so that the odour nuisance would be minimised," says site manager Dr Kristin Brand of Lobbe Industrieservice. The tar pit on the former gasworks site contains pollutant residues from gasworks production. "It contains deposits with high concentrations of cyanides, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) and other hazardous substances," explains Dr Brand.
The terraplan Baudenkmalsanierungsgesellschaft mbH purchased the site of the former gasworks in Nauen in order to convert the listed former production buildings into residential and commercial space. The gasworks was built in 1865 and, with several extensions, was used for the production of town gas until it was closed down around 1960
. The gasworks was also used for the production of town gas. The old brick tar pit with several chambers is located in the basement of the former apparatus building.
Lobbe arrived with heavy equipment for the clean-up work in order to exclude any contamination of the environment from the outset. On site, two employees were busy with all the work for about four weeks. First, the ceiling of the tar pit was carefully opened. Then the Lobbe team mixed the pasty tar mixture with lime ash to solidify it. A Lobbe excavator equipped with protective ventilation was used for this purpose. With this overpressure breathing air supply system, the driver is always supplied with clean breathing air. The mixture thus solidified was excavated and filled directly into a tight lidded trough provided for this purpose. Lobbe used pumping technology to extract the water that was also on the surface of the pit and filled it into ASF containers, which will also be disposed of properly. The construction waste contained in the tar mixture was sorted out and deposited separately. The construction waste will now be sampled and analysed before the competent authorities decide on its further disposal. The treated tar mixtures were then transported away in the closed roll-off troughs and sent for thermal recycling via the interim storage facility of Lobbe Industrieservice
GmbH & Co KG in Spremberg.
Now nothing stands in the way of converting the historic industrial site into flats.
