Sustainability in focus

Sustainable Development Goals

When they hear the term sustainability, many people think primarily of climate neutrality. Besides the carbon footprint, which should be as neutral as possible, there are 16 other criteria. With: human health, prosperity, justice, education, gender equality, decent work, economic growth, industry, innovation, life on land and under water are just a few mentioned. These selected examples show that sustainability is not just about energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Large corporations, international, listed groups have been obliged to produce a sustainability report for some time. For a year now, the EU has also been working on a catalogue of criteria for small and medium-sized enterprises. Around half of the medium-sized companies in Germany already produce a sustainability report today - often at the request of their customers. Lobbe is also working on this topic. With the extremely comprehensive audit and very strict criteria of Together for Sustainability (TfS), Lobbe has already provided initial proof of sustainability in 2019.

Lobbe's field of activity came into being as early as 1954 and was sustainable before the word was born: Gustav Edelhoff founded his "Company for Urban Cleaning" and took over waste collection in Iserlohn. The basic idea: the health of society.
The orderly removal of refuse was to prevent epidemics. In the following decades, a recycling economy developed that helped to avoid polluting the environment. Extracting raw materials from waste was - depending on the state of the art - the goal of the entire waste management industry from the very beginning. Today, wood, glass, metals, cables, paper, plastics, mineral waste, compost and much more are recovered from waste. Keeping water clean is reflected in the company's disaster management. Other focal points of the company's orientation are the promotion of personnel through further training, salaries that are customary in the industry, women in management positions and the use of renewable energies. Lobbe works according to the principle of sustainability in all areas. The focal points of Lobbe's service portfolio are in the areas of industrial services, waste disposal, recyclables processing, rehabilitation, sewer services and emergency management.

A concrete example is the recycling and use of plastics. Lobbe operates two recyclables sorting plants and a plant for the production of secondary plastic granulates. These granulates are produced purely by physical processes and the products are entitled to the Blue Angel label. Likewise, the comprehensive cleaning and disposal tasks in the petrochemical, chemical and mining industries as well as the remediation of contaminated sites are always in line with the principle of sustainability. In the cleaning of large-scale industrial plants, the dismantling of plant components as well as the soil remediation of contaminated sites by means of vacuum-thermal treatment, Lobbe supports clients with individually adapted solutions and contributes to optimising the life cycle of production plants, avoiding or eliminating environmental damage.

Together for Sustainability Audit

A total of 33 chemical companies worldwide have jointly developed a methodology to assess, audit and improve sustainability practices in the chemical industry: Together for Sustainability (TfS). The audit sets very high standards for occupational safety, production, climate protection, health, quality and disposal. At the end of July 2019, Lobbe completed a TfS audit for the first time with an excellent result. The audit catalogue for Together for Sustainability contains globally uniform criteria on management and environmental aspects, health and safety, employee and human rights as well as responsible corporate governance. They are tailored to the requirements of the chemical industry and follow international principles. This year, Lobbe is once again meeting these high requirements.

Energy and water

"We already use green electricity in some projects and plan to increase the share step by step," says Managing Director Dr Reinhard Eisermann. For example, the FVH recycling plant for the production of regranulates uses 100 per cent electricity from renewable energies. The Havariemanagement division is permanently committed to the elimination of environmental hazards - for example, in the case of the largest environmental disaster in the region, when more than 1,000 litres of oil spilled into the Wuppervorsperre due to the flood. All of Lobbe's disposal operations are in compliance with legal provisions, regulations and guidelines and usually exceed these minimum requirements.

Digitalisation, service providers and health

Lobbe masters the challenges of digital transformation and ecological change for the benefit of its customers and society as a whole. Digital workplaces are naturally part of this. Sustainability along the central fields of action named in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) - environment, social issues and responsible corporate governance - is of paramount importance to Lobbe and is an integral part of its corporate identity. When selecting new suppliers and service providers, Lobbe applies specific sustainability criteria and prefers to cooperate with companies that operate sustainably. Lobbe is opposed to all forms of forced labour and child labour. This positioning is a prerequisite for suppliers and service providers. Lobbe strives to avoid all work-related injuries and damage to the health of colleagues. Lobbe creates a safe working environment by providing up-to-date work materials, appropriate work organisation and technical innovations. The company offers all employees exercise and nutrition programmes to maintain their health
. Innovative techniques for working outside hazardous areas are key areas of development at Lobbe. This guarantees the future viability of the group. Innovations under the guiding principle of sustainability lay the foundation for the future of future generations.
