Lobbe and NRW Environment Minister meet

Kick-off meeting between waste management company and politicians with positive signals

Iserlohn, 18 August 2017 - On 17 August, the first meeting took place between the Minister of the Environment of North Rhine-Westphalia Christina Schulze Föcking, State Secretary Dr Heinrich Bottermann, the Chairman of the BDE Regional Association NRW and Managing Director of Lobbe Holding Ernst-Peter Rahlenbeck and BDE President Peter Kurth. The talks focused primarily on the effects of the new Packaging Ordinance. The Packaging Ordinance prescribes higher recycling quotas for plastics in the future. "The higher quotas make modern sorting of recyclables necessary, which we already have and will continue to invest in," says Ernst-Peter Rahlenbeck.

Less bureaucracy, more innovation

Above all, the trend towards less bureaucracy in the future was welcomed. This is because the federal framework conditions are created by the Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act, but the implementation in the respective federal states is regulated by the waste laws of the states. "In the past, NRW in particular introduced more bureaucracy and ordinances that were not required by the federal government. In the end, this only made waste disposal more bureaucratic, but not better. In future, we will focus on less bureaucracy, which will strengthen the innovative power of the waste management companies," says Ernst-Peter Rahlenbeck. Environment Minister Christina Schulze Föcking will visit the Lobbe sorting plant in Iserlohn in the coming months.

The Packaging Act from 2019

The aim is to promote the recycling - but also the avoidance - of packaging waste even more strongly. In the future, significantly higher recycling rates are to be achieved for packaging licensed and collected in the dual system. For example, the recycling rate for packaging licensed and collected in the dual system will increase. For example, the recycling rate for plastic packaging will increase from the current 36 percent to 63 percent by 2022. Recycling rates for other packaging materials will also be increased significantly, to 90 percent for metals, glass and paper. This is only possible if disposal companies invest in modern sorting technology. Lobbe operates the most modern sorting plant in Europe in Iserlohn. Here, in addition to other recyclable materials, four different types of plastic are sorted for recycling. Lobbe plans to invest in further facilities to the latest standards.
