TAR PITS VEB ROSITZ

Task: Clean up of four open tar pits

Time frame: June 1998 to Mai 2000

Substances: 40,000 tons of tar residue, contaminated soils and construction debris

Grube nach Abschluss

VEB Rositz tar storage area

The former tar processing plant in Rositz needed a complete ecological cleaning. The initial task was the clean up of four open pits. In addition to the recycling of the tar residues, the residue water and the contaminated soil had to be disposed of ecologically.

Information

Both the soil and water are substantially contaminated with hydrocarbons (BTEX) and phenol "carbolic waste water." The Lobbe vertical cutter prepared the residues for disposal by injecting anhydrous lime into the tar mixture. The mass was then dug up and taken from the site for ecological disposal. Lobbe removed thousands of tons of both liquid and pasty wastes.

To deal with the oil phase in the groundwater, a special drainage system had to be designed and built. Backfilling returned the formerly contaminated site to an ecologically acceptable standard, fit for further use.
