LAUTA TAR POOL
Task: Excavation, transport and disposal, tar pit 1-3 Time
frame: January 2000 to March 2000
Substances: 1,340 m³ tar and phenol water

Lauta tar pool
The three tar pools at Lauta were dug up for treatability testing. A determination had to be made as to decide what could and should be done to recover the area. The predesign investigation and pilot exploration determined exactly what emissions and water protection measures would be necessary for the protection of personnel and environment during the excavation.
Information
Before actual digging was initiated, sheet piling was installed in the walls of the dig out area. The heavily contaminated water in the pond was pumped directly into separation reservoir tren-ches or drawn off by vacuum tank trucks. A cable dredger dug out the tar. Digging within the limited confines of the walled in area necessitated small excavators that could work the corners.
Digging was done to the level of the groundwater. Often, the condition of the dug up material necessitated immediate on-site conditioning. The recovered soil mass was loaded into specially prepared basins in the processing area. All operations were carried out in conjunction with extensive analysis and evaluation of the recovered materia
