In Germany about 190,000 areas are registered suspected of contamination. About half of these are former used for industrial purpose, as landfill sites or as military bases. Because public funding is not readily available for the clean up and restoration of brownfields and private investor are hesitant to invest in problematic areas, the potenital valuable sites remain either unused or underutilized, although they often are situated in privileged locations in the cities. Lobbe invests in all necessary activities for site restoration including taking over the site, clean up, and marketing. Lobbe's concepts and plans are as wide ranging as the situations encountered:
- Example 1: A community in Germany's Westphalia budgeted six million DM for the tear down of a former iron foundry 105 sheds and buildings. Lobbe categorised all material, searching for the possibility to recycle most it, used the most cost effective disposal methods if recycling was not possible and facilitated communications among all involved parties and operators. Lobbe involvement brought the project to fruition for 1.5 Million DM under budget.
- Example 2: Lobbe took the task to remediate 12,000 tons of oil contaminated soil at an aban-doned site by biological means. A semi-mobile soil remediation facility was installed in the im-mediate vicinity. The polluted soil was sanitized in batches and returned to the site developer for refill and landscaping at predetermined intervals. Houses were built on the restored site.
- Example 3: Lobbe sanitized a 12-hectare former military base in North Rhine Westphalia. The site will become the terrain for high-value residential housing. The entire project was in Lobbe's hands - demolition of the buildings, remediation of the contaminated soil, as well as final refill and land contouring. Meticulous analysis and recording of the encountered contaminants kept sanitization costs to a minimum.
